Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Origin


The Staffordshire Bull Terrier comes from the Staffordshire region of, England. They were orignally breed in the nineteenth century from crosses between Bulldogs and various other terrier breeds. The Staffordshire Bull was orginally breed for the then-popular sport of bull baiting. Then, in the twentieth century, interest in the breed grew as a good family pet.

 

Description 

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier are known for doing everything full throttle! They are  extremely affectionate and can be very obedient. They are very strong and muscular for their size, they have  a short head with a broad skull.

Colour They can be red, fawn, white, black or blue, or any of these colors with white and in any shade of brindle with or without white markings.

Weight/Height Range Dogs should measure between  36 - 41 cms and weigh between 13 - 17kgs. Bitches should ideally measure between 33- 38cms and weigh between 11 - 15.4kgs.
Ailments All Staffordshire Bull Terriers are prone to hip dysplasia and skin and stomach sensitivities,  Staffordshire Bull Terriers are also prone hereditary cataracts, Hypothyroidism and congenital heart disease.

Feeding & Ownership

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is an undemanding dog to feed with no special dietary requirements, they generally have a good appetite.  Some however are prone to  sensitivities skin and stomach so may require and special diet

Personality

 

This breed is not recommended for an inactive owner or family, they need a confident owner who is consistent with their dogs training.  This is a brave, intelligent dog which is loyal to its family, they are boisterous with tremendous stamina. They are known to be chewers so it is strongly recommended to provided plenty of strong chew toys.

Grooming
 
The smooth, short-haired coat is easy to groom. Brush on a regular basis with a firm bristle brush, and bathe once every two weeks in the warmer months and bathe once a month in the colder months. It is also recommended to rub them down with a piece of towelling or chamois as this will make their coat shine.
